Grace Note

Grace Note is a unicorn living in the eastern Earth territory. He lives alone in a stone tower, where he makes and sells instruments to Earth ponies and Pegasi.

Appearance

Grace Note is a slightly older pony. His coat is purple and white, with darker purple spots on his back and a darker patch on his nose. There are tufts at the tips of his ears, which are blue-black, like his mane. His feathers are kept short on his front legs, but on the back they're grown out and starting to turn purple at the ends. His horn is longer than average, and turns white at the end.

He has sleepy, lidded eyes with dark eyeshadow and pointed lashes. He always has bags under his eyes. There is a mole next to his right eye. He has a short beard, which gradients from white to purple

He has blue-black hair that turns purple toward the ends. His mane and tail are both very long, but his mane is kept tied up in a bun with two gold hairpins. His bangs are pulled into the bun, but one strand always falls across his face. His tail is wavy and drags on the ground.

He often wears a pink/red shawl with tassels on the ends. When he's working, he wears a monocle and jeweler's loupe.

His Cutiemark is a violin and bow, with two musical notes.

His ankle heart is dark purple.

Personality

Grace Note is already a crotchety old man, even in his very early middle-age. He doesn't enjoy the company of other ponies, unless they're effusively complimentary of his skills (and his looks, to a certain degree). Mostly, he spends his time up in his tower working on his instruments and listening to his enchanted piano.

Biography

Grace Note was once a renowned musician in Saint's Spring, Unicornia, often performing in the royal court as well as for other noble unicorns. However, as he aged he began to sense that he was more of an object than a respected figure in society, a living music box. Any unicorn can technically operate an instrument, and a skilled magician could enchant one to play on its own without a musician to guide it. His unique skills were underappreciated. Jaded, he left the kingdom.

Earth ponies lived a life mostly devoid of instrumental music. They sang, played bells and pipes, but they can not operate a violin with their hooves. Grace Note found a proper audience there, for a time. But he doesn't enjoy performing anymore. Instead, he crafts instruments of all kinds, with new designs that make them accessible to Earth pony and Pegasus players. For example, lightweight wooden harps and flutes for pegasi, metal horns and accordions for Earth ponies, and enchanted player pianos for Earth taverns.

He does business with Earth ponies every so often, carting his wares into Apple Valley or Cherrywood (and on rare occasions, Dapple Beach) to sell at the markets. His tower has a balcony built especially to service Pegasus customers off the ground.
